Tri-n-butylcitrat ist ein ausgezeichneter Weichmacher sowohl für Cellulosederivate als auch für Vinylharze. Es bietet eine verbesserte Lichtstabilität bei Verwendung in Celluloseacetat. Tri-n-butylcitrat ist auch ein ausgezeichnetes Entschäumungsmittel in Proteinlösungen. Tri-n-butylcitrat unterstützt das Pilzwachstum nicht.

Die pharmazeutische Qualität (verkauft als TBC, NF) erfüllt alle Anforderungen, die in der US Pharmacopeia / National Formulary aufgeführt sind.
